Bulldogs Come Up Short by// Erikah Crosier

The Bulldog volleyball team got swept by Floyd Central in three sets last night.

The Bulldogs anticipated a difficult physical and mental match as both teams had comparable records going into the match. Bulldogs were looking to capitalize on FC’s passing and defensive weaknesses but the Bulldogs poor serving and receiving ultimately determined the match.

“They have several D1 athletes that are attackers who hit the ball really well” said Coach Breeding. “Especially in the 3rd game, that doesn’t mean we would’ve won the match but we were up 18-15 and kind of let it get away from us.”

Mary Claire Meyer wanted to leave the “lit” locker room atmosphere behind and be focused at game time. “Atmosphere is crazy before games” Meyer said. “But we try not to get too excited because we don’t play good”.

Bulldogs game plan was to go out and leave it all on the court. They executed the plan but still came up short. “We played enthusiastic, energetic and we stayed up the whole time as a team. We played really hard, with a lot of effort, even when we were down we stayed together and were relentless as far as trying to succeed” Sad Coach Breeding.

This loss puts the Bulldogs record at 7-5 overall and 1-2 in conference as the head into their match Tuesday. Tuesday’s game is Senior night and against cross town rivals Jeffersonville.

Bulldogs fight back, defeat Seymour 2-1 by// Alex Wallingford

The Bulldogs boys soccer team traveled to Seymour last night to defeat the Owls 2-1. The team had high hopes going into the game looking for a physical, but skilled matchup.

“I’m expecting it to be a really intense atmosphere,” junior defender Blake Hanen said. “It was really close and physical last year, but this year we are more skilled and plan to go up there and play to the best of our ability.”

The team was looking to get back on track as a team after they were knocked off in the Shelbyville Invitational by Franklin Central last weekend.

“I really want to come together as a team,” Hanen said. “We dropped one in the Shelbyville tournament. We have a real tough stretch of games the next couple of weeks and are looking to start this run on the right note.”

Sophomore Hayden Krebs was also looking to get back into their team winning ways.

“My goal for tonight is to be a good teammate and make sure that I’m not selfish with the ball,” Krebs said.

Krebs did just that with an assist on the game winning goal to teammate Schnaider Upchurch. Upchurch also scored the tying goal on a penalty kick earlier in the game with only 10 minutes and 14 seconds remaining in the second half.

This win has the Bulldogs riding high on a 2-0 conference record and a 7-1 overall record. The team will need this momentum heading into the toughest stretch of their schedule with Providence on September 12 followed by a tough Floyd Central team on September 14.

Boys Soccer Team Triumphant in Pre-Season Scrimmage by//Kami Geron & Alex Wallingford

August 9 the Bulldogs boys soccer team hosted their season opener, starting out the season with a 6-1 blow-out over the Christian Academy Warriors. Bulldogs sophomores Hayden Krebs and Schnaider Upchurch came out in the first half and each scored two goals.

As play continued, the Bulldogs played tough defense and went into the half with a 2-goal lead. In the second half the Bulldogs continued their fantastic play; freshman Gabe Kruer extended the lead to three and then senior Emanuel Martinez put in two more. Scoring the last goal for the Bulldogs was senior Christian Lopez de la Cruz. Christian Academy scored their only goal off of a free kick at the top of the box.

Next up, the team faces Forest Park at home Aug. 15 starting at 6 p.m.
